Gentlemans Day Out - 20 Nov 09
24 men went on a trip to Aguilón. The group was split into 12 men representing England and 12 representing the Rest of Europe.
We were all picked up on time at our designated pick-up points in Almerimar (apart from Roy who was a little late). Then we made our way to Aguilón. The coach trip took over 1.5 hours so we were grateful of the bacon butties on arrival.
Our first group teed off at 11.50pm (half an hour later than expected so we had plenty of time to prepare for the ordeal ahead). The course was very tough indeed and scoring wasn´t very good as everyone except Chalky had not played the course before.
After the round we all had some barbecued food plus some drink (quite a lot for a few people) on the terrace outside the small clubhouse until after the sun went down.
On the way back we had a little bit of a sing-song led by our very talkative MC, Frank. Sadly the only thing that this proved was that there were not very many good singers in our group.
A large number of the group then went to Las Uvas in the square having been turned away from El Arroz where the ladies were having dinner.
Thanks to Alan for organising the day, the golf course for making us so welcome and our coach driver for being so tolerant.
You can see photos from the day in the Gallery.
All players kept their individual stableford score. The top 6 scores and the bottom 2 scores for each team were added up and the final score was:
Rest of Europe 188, England 186 (even if the last hole had been played as a par 5 for those teams that scored it that way the result would still have been a win for Rest of Europe (191-190).
This is the 2nd year in a row that Europe have woin the Mens day out competition. Athough this year they did get help from 4 English people who played on their side to balance the numbers.
Individual prize winners were:
Best score - Dermot 31 points
2nd best score - Hans O
3rd best score - Walter
Best front 9 - Peter W (Chalky)
Best back 9 - Mike Cl
Best gross - Sune
Lowest score - Jürgen S (on countback from Jan L)
Nearest the pin - Frank
