FGS Handicap Rules - V1.3, Issued, 8 April 2016
The Friday Golf Society uses a variation of the European Golf Association (EGA) handicapping system.
Maximum handicaps at present are 40.0 for men (slopes to 45 at Almerimar) and 40.0 for ladies (slopes to 47 at Almerimar).
Adjustment of handicaps based on competition results at Almerimar
Handicaps will be adjusted following any FGS competition at Almerimar where there is an official slope table for the course and the format of the competition enables individual player scores to be recorded for handicap purposes (e.g. virtually all FGS Friday competitions except those where players don´t play their own ball for the whole round - so not Texas Scramble or Texas Best 2 etc.).
This means that Canada Cup competitions are eligible for handicap changes. This is where you play as a pair and add together your stableford points. However FGS handicaps will not be changed following better ball pairs competitions.
Adjustment of handicaps based on competition results from away days at other courses
Handicaps cuts will be made for any player scoring better than their handicap in FGS competitions at courses other than Almerimar. These cuts will occur based on the rule for General Play in the EGA Handicapping System. This is as stated in the 2016 Manifesto.
General Play reviews
Every 3 months the handicap committee will recommend possible changes to players handicaps based on their performance in recent competitions. The recommendations will be reviewed by the full FGS management committee. If approved, handicaps will be changed based on the rule for General Play in the EGA Handicapping System.
The guideline is that if you have played a number of rounds with FGS in the last 3 months and never scored 30 or more points we will consider you for an increase in handicap.
From time to time it may be appropriate for the handicap committee to recommend an immediate review of a players handicap. For example a change for medical reasons etc. Such changes can be recommended at any time by the handicap committee but must be approved by the full FGS management committee. These changed will occur based on the rule for General Play in the EGA Handicapping System.
The handicap committee
At present the handicap committee consists of Jacqui Mays, Alan Sly and John Woodhead.
SOFTWARE FOR MANAGING HANDICAPS
Previously we have used handicapping software from Golfshake. There is a considerable amount of FGS playing history on the golfshake site. You can see the historical Friday Golf Society information here on the Golfshake site.
However Golfshake software did not meet all of our requirements (e.g. it did not handle EGA handicapping so it didn´t handle sloped handicaps etc.). We only used the site to check the calculation of stableford points for players in competition, not for managing handicaps. So please ignore any FGS handicap information on Golfshake.
In April 2016 the society changed to using HandicapMaster software as this software supports EGA handicapping. It also supports the facility to automatically embed a handicap list on the FGS site produced via the Master Scoreboard website.
You can see links to details of FGS on the Master Scoreboard site via the FGS on Master Scoreboard menu item.

Here is the table we use for altering handicaps following individual competitions (it is from configuration 1 of the EGA 2016 handicap system - with notes about the FGS implementation):
CURRENT HANDICAP LIST
Below is the list of FGS handicaps on the Master Scoreboard website. Please note that at present the list only shows exact handicaps for each player. We have requested an improvement whereby the sloped handicap for the Master course at Almerimar is also displayed for each player. We will include this information when it becomes available.
If you’re using your mobile, try this page instead which will open a new window/tab: FGS on Master Scoreboard for Mobile
If you click on your name it will provide details of your results in the window below. To return to the handicap list press the back button in your browser.
