Overs vs. Under Start Times - 4 Mar 11

Cut off age for the Overs vs. Unders

Due to illness we are not certain of the exact line up for the players in the draw tomorrow. However we are pretty certain that it looks like the cut off between the two groups is likely to be 67 or 68 years old.

So if you are 67 or 68 it looks like you could be a youngster in Almerimar this year.

Don´t forget that we are going to play off the official tees on Friday to make sure that that older team get a bit of an advantage to try to even things up.

All ladies will play off the official red tees, Overs men will play off the official blue tees and Unders men will play off the official yellow tees. Thanks for Juan Francisco, Director of Golf at Almerimar, for allowing us the chance to play off official tees on Friday to ensure an advantage for the Overs team.

Spot the member competition

I have decided that I would like to run a spot the member competition.

The idea is that Founder Members provide me with a copy of a photograph of them when they were young. We will then publish the photos on a page on this site and invite members to guess who the different people are.

Further details will be published on the site in due course.

Partner for the competition on 27 March 2011

We are please to announce that the partner for the first ever competition to be held by the Friday Golf Society is the El Arroz restaurant. the competition will take place at Almerimar on Sunday 27 March 2011.

First prize in the competition is a voucher for a meal up to the value of 50 euros at El Arroz. Also, the prize giving for the event will take place one evening in the week after the event at El Arroz. The committee will encourage as many people as possible to attend the prize giving.

Well done to birthday girl Sharon

We have just processed the cards from yesterday and only one person played better than their handicap. Sharon Sly had 38 points. Her new FGS handicap is 21.0 which gets her 24 with the slope so she has lost a shot.

As we have mentioned on a few occasions. Between now and 31 May when the society takes over handicapping responsibilities Jacqui and I will be making some ad-hoc changes to handicaps. So a few of our players will get the gift of an extra shot or two next time they play with us.

Friday golf - 25 February 2011

Well done to Barry (his first time back with us for a while), Hans O (twice in 2 weeks) John A and Isabel F for winning yesterday with a team score of 88.

Last place and chocolates went to Richard T, Paul M, Ingegerd and Isabel H.

Thanks to Sharon for all the cava and cake she provided to celebrate her 50th borthday earlier in the week.

This week we welcomed 6 players from the Forum Golf Society (based at the other end of the province) who were playing in the area as one of them, George, was celebrating his 65th birthday. We had a brief discussion about perhaps organising an annual match between the two societies at some point in the future.

Tee times and draw for Overs vs. Unders - 4 March 2011

We have now confirmed that we have booked tee times from 10:00 to 10:48 on Friday 4 March 2011 for the Overs  vs. Unders competition.

This means that we can accept a maximum of 28 players.

We still have a few places left so if you are interested please put your name on the list in the clubhouse or get in touch soon.

Please note that we plan to do the draw for the matches at approximately 5:15pm in the Almerimar clubhouse on Wednesday 2nd March.

Details of the competition on Sunday 27 March 2011

The members of the committee are still working on the preparations for the competition on Sunday 27 March 2011.

First Sunday competition at Almerimar for the Friday Golf Society - 27 March 2011

I am responsible for the organisation of the first golf event to be arranged by the new committee of the society.

We have met with Juan Francisco, the Director of Golf at Almerimar, and he has agreed that we can hold an individual stableford competition for the FGS Founder Members on the Almerimar course on Sunday 27 March 2011. We are organising this competition in advance of the launch of the society so that Founder Members who leave Almerimar in the spring can take part in a Sunday competition before they leave.

The format will be individual stableford (with players using their FGS handicaps) and the entry fee will be 5 euros a person plus you pay your own green fee. Details of the prizes for the competition have yet to be finalised. However it is likely that the winners will receive vouchers for use in the pro-shop.

When we have finalised further details of the competition we will publish them here and put up a notice on the noticeboard in the clubhouse at Almerimar.

We hope that as many Founder Members as possible take part in this competition and help us practice organising what we hope will be many more friendly Sunday competitions in various formats at Almerimar in the future.

105 and counting

We had a project meeting with a subsection of the FGS committee in the Almerimar clubhouse today.

While there we picked up 4 more Founder Members, found out that I had missed noting down on the list on this site that another Founder Member had paid plus got another membership fee paid.

The great thing today is that 3 of the 4 new Founder Members were Spanish. Also it was really good that Juan Francisco, the director of golf at Almerimar, has agreed to be a Founder Member of the society.

Founder Member fees

If you have been reading the site you may have noticed that the Founder Members fees will become due on 1 July 2011 and must be paid by no later than 31 October 2011.

We have some people who are so good with their money that they have paid us their 20 euro fee already approximately 5-6 months ahead of when it was required. This money will come in useful as it will help us with our cash flow as we have a few start up costs (all will be revealed when we publish the budget for 2011/2012 by 1 June 2011).

If anyone else really wants to pay their fee early please see Sharon.

Latest on the Overs vs. Unders - 4 March 2011

The Overs vs. Unders on 4th March 2011 is the last major Friday competition being organised prior to the formation of the Friday Golf Society in Almerimar.

Following a lot of discussion between the organisers of this event (Alan ,Sharon, Jacqui and myself) we have decided to keep the entry price and the format of the event unchanged despite considering altering things.

Looks like we might make 100 which is way more than I ever anticipated.

Handicap cuts for Robbie and Roisin - 18 Feb 11

Robbie scored 38 points yesterday (the second time in two Fridays that he has beaten his handicap) and Roisin scored 41 points. Well done to them both.

As Jacqui and I are in charge of Friday handicaps until the society is officially launched on 1 June we can decided on handicap changes for Friday players.  We have decided to apply cuts to their handicaps based on the EGA system so Robbie´s Friday handicap is now 12.2 and Roisin´s is 26.1.

Please note that between now and 31 May 2011 Jacqui and I may alter some handicaps based on ´general play´so we may decide to cut some people or give some shots back to people based on our assessment of people´s playing record.

Friday golf - 18 Feb 11

Well done to Hans O, Jürgen C, Ortrud and Antje (two friends of Klaus) for winning this weeks Yellow Ball competition with a team score of 122. Last place and chocolates went to John Wo, Rob Baker, Beric Elwell and Brian Nutt with a score of 104. It would have been a score of 108 if I hadn't left the scorecard at the clubhouse. That would have just saved our team from the chocolates on lower handicap. That's life I suppose.

Jacqui has been entering the individual scores on the golfshake site. We are using a new test version of the golfshake handicapping software so people will not be able to see the whole list of scores in a leaderboard from Friday (or last Friday) at the moment. The leaderboards will be published once the new software is available for general use. However all of the scores have been added into peoples individual results record so you should be able to check your personal results on golfshake now.

92 Founder Members and counting

The email we sent out yesterday inviting people to become Founder Members has had a good response.

We now have 92 applications for founder membership and still more than 3 months to go before the window for founder membership closes. Thanks to everyone who has been in touch.

We need your input on the budget and calendar for 2011/12

One of the biggest jobs the new committee has got is agreeing the calendar for the 2011/12 season and the associated budget.

We really want the input from members about these linked subjects. However we do not want the discussions to be public on the internet.

If you have views on how many competitions and what type of competitions we should organise in 2011/2012 (or views on any other aspect of the calendar) please contact one of the committee (Alan, Bryn, Herbert, Jacqui, John, Lennart or Sharon).

Alternatively please email the committee with your views via email (see the Contact page).

Or even better, register on this site and add your views in the Forum. That way your views can be seen by other members and perhaps it will stimulate them to comment.

Possible change for the Overs vs. Unders 2011 - 4 March

In an attempt to encourage more players to take part and support the clubhouse we are going to ask if the management of the clubhouse restaurant will change the format of the lunch to a menu del dia. That way we can reduce the entry fee but people will have to buy their own drinks.

If we are successful the entry fee for golfers will become 25 euros (lunch and a gift) and for guests will be 15 euros (just lunch).

Cards processed on Golfshake for 11 Feb 11 competition

Today we entered the cards on a trial version of new software on the Golfshake system. This allowed us to have the men & ladies playing in a single competition. The data entry was fine but it may be a little while before the results show up in peoples statistics.

The only person to beat their handicap this week is Robbie with a score of 37 points. His FGS handicap has come down to 12.9 as the results of this score. Well done to Robbie.
